It's Always About The Timing

So, here’s the situation: We’re thinking about making some changes in life, and we’re wondering how to spot the perfect time to act. Perfect timing means perfect success, right? Here’s a news flash. There are no perfect times. There are bad times, good times, even excellent times. But never a perfect time. For anything. But that doesn’t mean we can go ahead willy-nilly without considering whether the circumstances add up to a good time or a bad time. We have to stick an elbow in the bath water and check the temperature before we proceed. Timing always counts. So let’s consider how to read the times. A good time is any time when things seem pretty normal, when words like “saga” don’t keep coming up. The kids’ report cards may not be all they could be. Losing the standard fifteen pounds might seem like an impassable mountain. In the larger world, employment is pretty stable. The stock market is hanging in there. All normal. When things are pretty normal at home and in the economy, it’s a good time to start new stuff. Then there are the not-so-good times, when we need caution. Even when life’s a little lumpa-lumpa, though, we want to launch if we see a sweet spot. For example, there once was a day when the world sat lorn and unaware we all wanted to spend big money on a sugar-laden cup of coffee and call the waitress a Barista. Then along came Starbucks. Same thing with Federal Express. And so many others. Sweet spots beat lumpa-lumpa times. Then there are the bad times. When life whacks us a good one, it may be time to rest and recoup rather than start something new. When somebody we love dies, our lives look like a pile of rubble, and none of it makes sense. Divorce does that, too. There’s a gaping hole where our vital organs used to be. After a major hit, it takes about a year for our brains to really function again. We may labor under the illusion we’re thinking clearly, but our brains are mush. It’s not a great time to make decisions. Sometimes, though, we can’t take time to recover. Perhaps our livelihood gets yanked away, and we have to find a future–as in right now. We have to act, ready or not. Or we may see the sweet spot of our dreams. Those don’t come around every day, so, here too, we have to take action–once we make sure it’s not a mirage. True sweet spots beat bad times. Going it alone is always tricky, but going it alone in bad times is asking for trouble. We need to get other people to talk and think with.. Who can help? Forget the negativity drippers. Negative words splash acid on our dreams. Even if it’s the uncle with money, we can’t afford their presence when we’re in a ditch. And we don’t want untrustworthy people tromping into our lives. Who needs to end up as a tasty morsel of gossip? We also shouldn’t engage with the clueless. However charming and sympathetic they may be, if they don’t know anything about what we’re trying to do, they can’t help. We need trust and loyalty, plus an understanding of the situation and the possibilities. All this gold may not come for free. It often requires more than one person to get all we need, but a cheering squad gives us more oomph than a lone sis-boom-bah anyway. So, here’s how it goes: We move with confidence in good times. We add a little caution in the lumpa-lumpa times. We lean hard on help to keep on keeping on in the bad times. The most important thing at any time is to keep looking ahead. Maybe wounded, maybe soaring, but never giving up. Giving up is losing. © 2007 by Bette Dowdell. All rights reserved.

New Year's Resolution Alternatives? Tired Of Resolutions As Usual? Try A Different Path To Success

New Year’s resolutions? Not again! Don’t you remember what happened last time? I don’t know about you, but for me, New Year’s resolutions always come with a big bat: I resolve to do something, I stop doing it, and I beat myself up about it. In fact, the vast majority of people deviate from their resolutions sooner or later, usually sooner. And most of the rest are probably lying or kidding themselves. Of course, there might be a FEW hardy souls out there somewhere who actually stick with their resolutions. Good for them! For the rest of us, though, I would like to propose an alternative. And no, it’s not too late. See, that’s the beauty of alternatives: They don’t have to follow the same rules as resolutions. Which means that you don’t have to start (or make) them on the first day either! Here’s what I’d like to propose: Instead of “resolving,” let’s visualize, project, envision, allow, and, yes, even dream. I haven’t made New Year’s resolutions in years. Instead, I tend to sit down and spend some quality time dreaming up what I would like to happen in the coming year. I try to be somewhat within the realm of the possible, given ideal circumstances, but I make sure not to aim too low. So let’s not make resolutions. Let’s not say “Next year I will ALWAYS blah blah blah and if I fail to do so, I’m a loser!” Instead, let’s try this: “Next year, I see myself meeting …. and creating ….. and….” Put in the spaces whatever it is you would like to do or have happen for you. Whom would you like to meet? Is there a business you’re trying to get off the ground? Visualize it up, running, and thriving. Visualize your many happy customers or clients. Or readers, if you plan to write. Is there a personal goal you would like to reach? Yes, the same kind we usually make resolutions for. Instead of the usual resolutions, though, say something like this: “I see myself enjoying moving my body regularly and feeling full of energy. I love fresh and nutritious food, and I enjoy creating tasty meals and eating them.” And so on. You get the idea Here’s one I need to envision for myself: “I really enjoy getting enough sleep and feeling well-rested!” You can also envision specifics: “I see myself writing [X number of] pages most days, and as I add page after page after page, my [novel/book/other project] is getting closer and closer to completion. I see it completed before the year is over.” Oh, and why not see it accepted by an appreciative agent and/or publisher too. Now what happens if you don’t make it? Well… there is always that little addendum to visualization and manifestation exercises: “This or something better…” Imagine the oft-rejected “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book proposal had been accepted by a publisher right away who had bought all rights and printed just a few thousand copies, only to let it go out of print. You know what happened instead. Of course, knowing the authors, you also know that they would have made their book a success no matter what kind of conditions they would have had to work with. Still, an interesting thought to keep in mind. We don’t always know what’s best for us in the long run. We may think we know. We may kick and scream as things don’t work the way we want them to. But how many times have you failed to receive what you wanted and realized later that you were oh so much better off without it? Happened to me lots of times! Or that because you didn’t get it, things developed in a way that brought something to you that was so much better than what you had wanted originally that the very thought of not having that in your life could make you weep? So this year, let’s not make New Year’s resolutions. Let’s do something different. Let’s visualize. Let’s project. Let’s dream! And let’s have an absolutely amazing new year.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Well not really, you have to know where you are and where you want to be in order to improve anything. So deciding that your time management skills are poor, and learning how to get better and where you want to be is time well spent. How ever in saying that if you’ve been searching for time management information for days now, and are still looking for a perfect solution there’s a chance you’re procrastinating. Just one trait of someone with poor time management. So what can you do to start improving your time management right away? Make lists and prioritize Often it’s not that people aren’t effective with their time rather they just don’t spend the time they have doing the right things. We’re all guilty of this at one time or another, but some of us are habitual with it. The easiest way to determine if you do this is to make a list each morning, or the night before of the things you need/want to accomplish the following or that day. Once you have your list prioritize the items from greatest to least importance. Now spend a day and perform the tasks in the order you prioritized them. This does two things. a.) It shows you what you need to accomplish in a day so you now have some urgency because you know there are other tasks to get done not just the one you are currently working on. b.) It ensures that the most important items are being taken care of first. There are times when we can’t finish every item on our list but at least we took care of the most important issues first. Learn to say no You can’t do everything for everyone. Following our list exercise above it’s obvious that if you have a list of 20 things and only time for 10 of them in a day then it’s hard to accept additional activities from others. Of course there are trade offs that a more important task could come along and you exchange it for another task you were going to do that day. This gets into another discussion on life priorities such as friends, family, career, remember balance is also important. But you can’t do everything so if the boss wants you to work late that night, but your supposed to see your son’s hockey game you have to be able to say no somewhere. Don’t book every moment of your day Now while we’ve preached lists, daily organization, and learning to say no you do need to leave some room for flexibility. Booking up every moment of your day so that you’re on a minute-by-minute schedule can be a big problem if a mini crisis occurs in the day that wasn’t accounted for. Use other tools Using day planners, or PDA’s to keep track of appointments and to do lists will save time and promote organization on all levels. Also keeping good contact information whether it be in a contact database on your computer or in an address book will save time when you need to contact people.

Now You Can Have A Happy Life That You Have Been Dreaming On

Who doesn’t want a happy life? Only real fools would reject it. Yet, many people out there feel sad and feel bad about their life. Are you one of those people? I used to be one. But, then, I woke up and I was no longer part of the pathetic group of people. Do you realize that happiness is yours to create? It’s all in your head. How’s that? You might ask. It’s about focusing on your blessings and ignoring your misfortunes. Every time you feel sad about something that is happening in your life, try not to think about it. Instead, direct your mind to all the blessings that God has granted you. Count your blessings; remember things that make you happy and smile. And, always look at the bright side. Everything that happens to us is meant for a reason. Let’s say, now, you have just got fired from a job with a very high salary. But, did you really enjoy the job? Were you not complaining every time you go home from work? Your being fired might be a way for you to find a job that you enjoy doing. It’s an opened gate to a happier life. People sometimes focus themselves to their loss instead of a brighter future. And, that’s the biggest contribution to a very very unhappy life. The last thing to do is get on the street. Look at those homeless people out there. They’ve got no home. And you? You’ve got a home, a great family, a job, a speedy internet connection. You should be very thankful. Compared to them, you have the world. So, do you still think you have the right to be unhappy? If I were you, I would say no. A big NO. If your answer is still yes, you’d better reread all the above lines.
